I’m not going to mention a specific brand here because I’ve tried so many, but I love coconut oil! It’s another great multi-tasker. This one crosses the barrier from personal care into food! Now, I’ve used coconut oil for cooking meat (I don’t recommend it because the meat tastes like coconut), and baking (yummy, definitely recommend using in place of processed lard!!)
As for personal care, I’ve used it in the following ways:
- Facial moisturizer – I definitely recommend doing this! Your face will be very shiny when you put this on put don’t be scared – it is a great moisturizer. My skin is pretty sensitive and it hasn’t irritated my skin or caused breakouts. Just be sure to give it enough time to absorb before you go to bed, or it will get on your pillowcase.
- Hair mask – coat the hair in coconut oil, leave it in for 10 – 15 minutes, then wash out. Sometimes I have to wash twice to get it out completely. Hair comes out soft, silky and moisturized.
- Body Moisturizer – hands, feet, entire body. If you’re going to put coconut oil on your entire body, be prepared to be without clothes for quite a while because it takes a LONG time to absorb. I learned this the hard way one day. It took about 20 minutes or so to absorb to the point where I could get dressed without having a bunch of coconut oil on my clothes.
- Lip Balm – put some on your finger and rub it over your lips. Instant moisture!
If you’ve been wanting to try nontoxic products but aren’t sure where to start, I would certainly say that coconut oil is the way to go.
